Three further children have reached settlements with the HSE in cases relating to in-utero exposure to the epilepsy medication sodium valproate (Epilim).
The Department of Health has confirmed that it will not be publishing an interim report of the ongoing public inquiry into the regulation of sodium valproate, despite the terms of the inquiry not explicitly prohibiting publication. Support group OACS Ireland has emphasised the need for a comprehensive redress scheme for all affected families rather than prolonged litigation.
Speaking to the Irish Examiner, Michael Boylan LLP solicitor Ciara McPhillips highlighted that families continue to be brought through the courts while an inquiry that was promised years ago is progressing without clarity on what, if any, compensation outcomes will follow.
Sodium valproate, manufactured by Sanofi, has been linked to serious birth injuries when taken during pregnancy.
